Antique Rectigon Battery Charger or Rectifier? Mystery Electronics in Wood Box

$ 6.33

Availability: 98 in stock
  • Condition: I do not know what this is. The box had 2 small chains on the inside to hold the lid up when in use and those chains are gone with just a small remnant remaining. It is dirty from years of use. Many of the papers appear to have gotten battery acid on them and they are disintegrating. 2 of the gauges have lens problems. This unit definitely does not work because half of the plastic insulation has cracked and fallen off due to age. Read the description and see the pictures for additional condition information.

    Description

Let’s start by saying that I do not know what this is.
So, look at the pictures and judge for yourself.
The wood box measures 11-5/8” long x 4-1/4” tall x 8-1/4” wide (not counting the steel handle.
The wood box has 2 hinges on the back for the lid and it has a hook latch that is stiff but works.
The box had 2 small chains on the inside to hold the lid up when in use and those chains are gone with just a small remnant remaining.
On the lid of the box someone wrote “5.00” long ago.
Inside the lid of the box is a flexible clip for holding paperwork.
There are primarily 4 pieces of paperwork.
The first is a Westinghouse Standard Price Schedule for Large Mazda Lamps and Type D Lamps.
It is dated Nov. 1, 1942.
All 3 of the remaining pieces of paper appear to have gotten battery acid on them and they are disintegrating.
The second piece of paperwork has 4 partial pages and headlines “Westinghouse / Attachments for use with 2 and 5 amp., Form A Rectigons for Charging Lead Storage “B” Batteries of form 11 to 24 cells”.
The third piece of paperwork is a partial tag that headlines, “Instructions to Prepare Federal ‘B” Battery”.
The fourth piece of partial paperwork folds out to 6 pages and headlines, “Westinghouse Rectigon Battery Charger”.
These papers did not identify this unit for me because the pictures on the paper does not look like this unit.
The unit inside the box has 3 sockets to screw in 3 light bulbs and only 1 bulb remains.
There are 3 gauges plus there are 3 toggle switches.
Along the bottom of the metal panel is a row of 8 lead plug-ins that are color coded red and black.
There are also 2 sets of leads in the wire storage compartment with 1 end plugging into one of the sockets and has clamps on the opposite ends.
This unit definitely does not work because half of the plastic insulation has cracked and fallen off due to age.

    This has cracked glass.
    Middle Gauge
: Amperes Hoyt Meter Type 541 also a 196 lower and at the top Made in U.S.A.
This had a plastic cover instead of glass which partially warped or melted and yellowed.
    Right Gauge

This gauge does not have additional identifying text.
    It has good glass.
I could not find a similar unit on the internet; so, regardless of defects – this is hard-to-find or rare.
As a collectible, it displays well and generates discussion.
